It was thought that choosing Karol Wojtyla, cardinal from Krakow, as the new pontiff in 1978 would permanently change many things. Not only his way to Pope’s position was different but also he wasn’t an Italian noble or Vatican bureaucrat like his predecessors. Pope John Paul II always wanted to mitigate worldwide conflicts, was opposed to injustice and harsh regimes; moreover, he had great influence on the fall of communism in eastern Europe. That spontaneous, lively man loved public meetings. He had a wonderful connection with people, especially with the youth. Even when he was gravely ill he never decided on leaving believers, encouraging them to be strong, persistent and to not give into physical disabilities. “His trademark gesture of kneeling and kissing the ground wherever he visited was taken as a demonstration of his reverence for all peoples, all cultures” said Guardian Staff in an article titled “World loses a Pope of peace and dignity”. He showed people that forgiveness is very important when he met with his would-be killer. Pope John Paul II taught by his behavior which was noticeable in every step he took.
