LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 (Ticker,0) -- Gary Payton gave his customary NBA greeting to rookie Dwyane Wade.
Payton jumped all over Wade in the first quarter, triggering a quick start that the Los Angeles Lakers rode to an easy 99-77 victory over the outclassed Miami Heat.
A perennial All-Star with a reputation for dressing down rookies, Payton collected 13 points and eight assists. He did most of his damage in the first quarter against Wade, the fifth overall pick in the draft.
"We had to establish a big lead (with,0) me being aggressive and getting the team into everything," Payton said. "That's the way to get everyone involved. We knew we could do that with this team."
Payton had 11 points and five assists in the first period, quarterbacking the offense and helping the Lakers open a 31-21 lead. On consecutive possessions, he took Wade into the low post and buried fadeaway jumpers over him, drawing a foul on the second one.
"He's a young guy and I'm an old guy and I've got to show him how to play," the 35-year-old Payton said. "We're trying to win basketball games and he's out there and we're going to try and exploit him. I just did what I had to do to him and we got an advantage right away."
"He hit some tough shots right away and I was right in his face on a couple of them," Wade said. "Maybe he was trying to establish himself, showing me that he's a veteran and I'm a rookie."
Payton made a steal and beautiful pass to Karl Malone for a layup, set up Shaquille O'Neal for a dunk and sank a jumper for a 23-9 lead. The Lakers led by double digits for all but 2:12 thereafter.
Wade got a small measure of revenge, blocking one of Payton's shots. But he spent most of the game in foul trouble and finished with 10 points and five turnovers.
"It was a good challenge," Wade said. "It helps me get better for the next time we play them. I'll get a better sense of what I need to do."
Perhaps the NBA's most notorious trash-talker, Payton did not run his mouth much with Wade, who also kept quiet.
"I like him," Payton said. "There wasn't nothing there. I think he understands it's better to say nothing. He's going to be a good, young player."
Co mnie tylko wkurwia, że jak na espn są zdjęcia z meczów, to połowa z nich jest zawsze Kobe Bryanta.
